Have you ever directed a big finish play?

The direct answer is: No.

The reasons being; A: I haven’t been asked. And; B: It’s not so easy as you think.

I have directed both stage and film projects. I blanch from calling them productions. And I do feel I have a certain flare for them. But that doesn’t, necessarily, make me a good audio drama director. when it comes to audio drama, you have to have a certain amount of trust. Trust in that you have cast the right person for the job and trust in your sound mixer. Big Finish have a fine pool of directors to call on and rarely do performers get to break into that pool. Ms Bowerman has done it, but then she has been doing the rounds for quite a number of years. And as it is now her main source of employment, she gets the opportunity to direct as well as act. Though I don’t think she would have the courage to direct a Benny, any more than I would.

Some directors are better than others of course. Gary Russell is by far the best amongst the B F directors. But then, he did start out as an actor, so knows how to get the best out of a performer. Or, at least, what approach will get the best results. If I have one criticism of Gary it is that he tend to get his ‘chums’ involved. And just because they are friends, doesn’t necessarily make them good actors. The Gay Mafia effect.

Some directors, on the other hand, are so star struck (and they all tend to be fans) that they will be totally blinded. And , consequently, not direct at all.

This is where the sound mixer comes into his own. Toby at Moat House Studios is more responsible for the end product than anybody else. So if you enjoy an audio drama, your hat should go off first to him.
